Why do we do Transform?

Transform is an opportunity for us to engage our communities in a purposeful and powerful way. Transform is designed to bring church members together with community members to improve our local schools. Our hope is that this event would be a spring board into building lasting relationships between church members, students, parents, teachers and administrators.

I am interested in starting up a "Transform" program in my church or city. Would you be able to help walk us through this process?

For starters, we would suggest trying to mold your projects to your community and to your people. We try hard not to do service projects just to do service projects, but to use those opportunities to establish and build relationships. We desire to build relationships (1) with those in the community who we are helping and who are helping along with us, and (2) we desire to develop relationships with other church members in the process. This will look different to every location, and in every congregation, so it's important to adapt your program to their needs and meet them where they are.

For instance, it might be nice to build a swing set at a school. We might only have 3 or 4 skilled people to do that, so we would rather choose to do projects like paint classrooms and hallways instead. This doesn't require a lot of skilled volunteers and 20 people can do that, therefore helping accomplish our goal of establishing relationships more than just building the swing set.

Again, it looks different with different venues, so it's hard to suggest what sort of projects to do. I would highly suggest developing a "why are we doing this" goal/vision, and then work out the "how can we accomplish this" aspect.

As far as documentation about Transform, we are currently building out processes for all of our ministries so we can have something to hand out to those looking to do something similar. If you'd like, please take a look at www.rebuildportsmouth.com as they recently developed a "Transform" of their own. They might be a great asset to tap into to find out the particulars on starting up a program like this.

Yes. A Participation Agreement and Media Release form is required before serving at Transform. These forms can be found on location and can be filled out upon arrival.
